The Bottom Billion

By | March 5, 2015

The four traps pointed out by Paul Collier I found very interesting, especially when dealing with countries that have resources such as oil, but yet it seems like that country is still stagnant or moving backwards economically. These countries are either dealing with constant conflict and war, corrupt government, or more than likely, both. Conflicts scare away other countries to get involved in fear of starting something larger. If oil is found, then that area may prosper but the wealth made off the oil isn’t invested into the rest of the struggling nation, but rather pocketed by the government and investors. These factors turn into what exactly they are described as, traps. The stat showing that 73 percent of the bottom billion are either in or recovering from a civil war is nuts to me, and makes it seem like there is no brighter tomorrow for these people or countries.
